Learn more about:  HID   Blue Bulbs   Bulb Types    Aiming your lights

I was just recently informed (thanks to Curt at Z28.com! ) that an E-Code replacement lens assembly is offered for the headlights.   From my understanding E-Code headlamps are those based on meeting European specifications.  They have much more strictor and varying laws regarding lighting and vehicle operation.  Often referred to as "export" assemblies they tend to produce better light and allow for more versatility.  With these you can replace the bulbs like as done with the Autooptiks kit mentioned above.
Keep in mind that E-Code lamps do meet many specifications and tolerances not found on stock assemblies and conversion kits.  This makes for a more effective lamp as should be already found on our cars, unfortunetly they are not.
These lamps also use the H-7 bulbs which allow for easy changes and can be bought anywhere.  It is said that even remaining at stock wattages, lighting is greatly improved from the reflective qualities of this housing as compared to stock.

All the details can be found on their site from the link above.  This is a headlight conversion that replaces the factory housing with one that enables you to put in a H-7 bulb of your desire.  They also offer their version of an "HID" equipped conversion as well.  Unlike the do-it-yourself version as listed above, this unit has been modified to accomidate these bulbs without RTV sealant.  You simply replace the bulb like many other cars that allow you to just "twist and remove" from the housing.
This enables the owner to keep the factory appearnace and the convience of switching bulbs without any hassle.  Without be a product "basher" I would suggest you research the "quality" of this product at Camaro Z28.com (in the Appearance section) or
LS1.com
.  I will leave you with the fact that their have been more people disappointed than satisfied in my prior searches into this product.
Option #1 : bulb replacement

The newest body style cars enable you to simply switch the bulbs.  They are a fixed housing rather than a sealed beam  as previous model years.  This allows the freedom to change wattages and colors with relative ease.

Low Beam : 9006  (55watt)
High Beam: 9005  (65 watt)

There are many companies which carry these bulbs in various wattages and colors in these sizes.  Although I have not heard of any problems, it is recommended to stay with factory wattages when replacing these due to potentail wiring complications.
Many owners are running higher wattages with no adverse side affects (that I have been informed of ).  Only complaint that has been brought to my attention is that these higher wattage bulbs only last 3 to 6 months, depends on the amount of driving is done with the lights on.
For more information regarding using higher wattages, ask those with this experience at LS1.com and Camaro Z28.com.  Again running higher wattages than factory specs may cause damage to the electrical system and results may vary from car to car based on others results.

Option #2 : Not Applicable

At this time I have not heard of any conversion kits being made or utilized.  Since the ease of installation of replacement bulbs, no one has ventured to do any kind of swap.  Their is currently no replacement "polished" assembly , like many Import owners are offered, at this time either.
This polished housing is a direct bolt-in replacement that offers a "superior" reflective surface on the inside as compared to stock.  Some even allow the conversion to a "projector" beam set-up for the luxury car or exotic car appeal.

**If this polished housing has become available please send me links and information so that I may post it for others to see. ****

All the details can be found at the link provided above (Thanks Brent !).  This concept was developed first by a tuner company called Rytek in 1996.  The kit, which is no longer available, completely replaces the factory headlights with Piaa 1000 driving lights.
This is the set-up which I have been using on my car since January of 2000.  The link provides written instructions on two known versions on how to accomplish the conversion to your car.  I can say that this has been one of the greatest modifications I could have made.  Lighting has improved by 2x compared to stock.  I can easily see safetly at highway speeds (and above) on these desolate NM roads as compared to the stock brights.  Not to mention I have a destictive look that has recieved many compliments.  Many others have successfully done this using other lights (Catz MSX, Piaa 1100x) and their own install methods.

t          I made this GUIDE to assist owners of 4th Genereration F-Bodies decide what they may want to change regarding their car headlights.  As a member of Camaro Z28.com I often see many questions  asked repeatedly regarding lighting options.  As owners of these vehicles it is widely know this is a major short coming from the factory.  Some may see this from a safety perspective, others from a "custom" or show perspective.  Whatever the reason, I have assembled a list of options that are currently available at this time for us in lighting modifications.
Not all options for every model of 4th gen. may be listed and the information provided is assumed to be current.  If you find any of this information to have changed or new products have become available, please e-mail me so that I can make the appropriate changes to this page.

Option #1 (least expensive):  9006 and 9005 bulb replacement into existing headlights.

These are the same bulbs types that can be bought at any automotive supplier (AutoZone, Checker, Wal-Mart, etc.) in various wattages and colors.  Many people have succesfully taken the sealed beams from the car and pried the bulb from the back of the housing.  Then using either the 9005 (high beam) and 9006 (low beam) placed these into the glass housing and attached them using RTV sealant so to keep out moisture and retain them in place.  Many feel this a sufficent way to replace the lighting at a less expensive price and add any custom colors they may have previously wanted such as the HID simulated blue, or yellow.
Although not an "improvement" in lighting, it serves it's purpose as seen by many to be good enough.  I will post instructions how to accomplish this as soon as someone who has done this e-mails me a write up.  Of course you will be given credit :)

****  I don't know the specifics on factory bulbs right now.  I was told they changed from the previous model years.  I will post this information soon.  I have also seen that someone has developed a "conversion kit" similar to that of the SLP FireHawk with fixed lights which never made production.  There are currently no pictures or details available at this time as the maker is pursuing legal matters (he is going to sell them on the net) for patents I am assuming.  As soon as this information becomes public I will do my best to post here ASAP.   This conversion will apply to the '93-'97 cars too as I understand.*****
